Scott Christian University is committed to training students in a wide-range of church-related areas, and with attention to various levels of training. Programmes are currently offered at the Diploma, Bachelor and Master’s levels. In all programmes, attention is provided for integrating cognitive knowledge with character and ministry-based application. ‘To the complete person’ or maturity (Eph 4:13) is the vision for the education at Scott Christian University.
Diploma in Theology (Dip.Th.):
The Dip.Th is a four-year programme that is offered at the main Machakos campus, as well as in each of the satellite campuses. The Diploma in Theology is ideal for those interested in pastoral and church-based ministry because of its practical implementation. Like the B.Th, the Diploma offered courses in four categories – Biblical Studies, Theological Studies, General Studies, and Ministry Studies. This provides an emphasis on biblical and theological studies while ensuring, through General Studies and Ministry Studies, an integration with the wider world of human experience that will be the context of the graduates anticipated ministry.
In addition to course work, all students are expected to participate in Field Education and Learning Contracts. These provide a context for the structured learning, where the principles and theories can be applied to character, church, and ministry situations. These include weekly mentoring by faculty members, weekly team ministries, weekend and 10-day evangelistic campaigns, and a 3 month Internship at the middle of their fourth year of the programme.
Students in the Diploma of Theology programme, in addition, may choose to concentrate on a specific area of study. These ‘vocational concentrations’ are presently offered in: pastoral ministry, Christian education, missiology, and plans are under way to also include: counselling, chaplaincy, leadership, and community development.
Upgrade Options: The Diploma in Theology from Scott Christian is structured in such a way that allows certain students of superior academic ability the option to upgrade to the Degree programme after their third year. This would allow a student to complete a B.Th. after five (5) years of study. Alternatively, other students completing the Dip.Th. would have the option of upgrading to a B.Th. for an additional two years, providing that their academic abilities are sufficient to allow for this.
Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.):
The Bachelor of Theology programme is a four-year residential programme and is currently only offered at the Machakos campus. Like the Dip.Th., the Bachelor of Theology combines Biblical Studies, Theological Studies, General Studies, and Ministry Studies to provide for the very highest in academic and integrative scholarship, within the contemporary African context. While the B.Th is ideal for those interested in pastoral or ministerial service, it also prepares students for higher levels of academic scholarship; eventually preparing students for the possibility of post-graduate research.
Like the Dip.Th., students in the B.Th. are expected to participate in Field Education and Learning Contracts. These provide a context for the structured learning, where the principles and theories can be applied to character, church, and ministry situations. These include weekly mentoring by faculty members, weekly team ministries, weekend and 10-day evangelistic campaigns, and a 3 month Internship at the end of their third year of the programme.
Students in the Bachelor of Theology programme, in addition, may choose to concentrate on a specific area of study. These ‘vocational concentrations’ are presently offered in: pastoral ministry, Christian education, missiology and plans are under way to also include: counselling, chaplaincy, leadership, Christianity and culture, music and community development.
Presently, Scott Christian University only proposes a Master’s degree of Education with Master of Education(Proffessional Leadership training) that is still subject to CHE Acreditation. Plans are under way to also launch Master’s degrees in: Theology, Counselling, and Leadership, in the near future.
Masters Degree in Education (M.Ed.):
The M.Ed. is a distance-based programme allowing students to remain in their areas of work, ministry or service while applying their learning directly to those contexts. Students will participate in web discussion forums, facilitated by faculty members, which will provide on-going feedback and interaction through their course of study. Furthermore, once or twice a year students will be expected to come together for one-week, intensive forums that will provide relevant teaching, interaction, and mentoring from the faculty members. Finally, integrated into the entire curriculum is a high commitment to biblically and faith-based scholarship in order to inform all facets of the curriculum. Instrumental to the entire programme is a commitment to critical thinking, creativity, and focus on learning styles within the context of education.
The M.Ed. is ideal for any student who wishes to pursue graduate-level training in education, while located, and applied, to their chosen field of service. The programme combines high levels of Christian scholarship with flexibility and integration -- areas that are essential for educational contexts -- whether they be church-based, school-based, or in another para-church context.
The M.Ed. is being offered in connection with the National Institute for Christian Education (NICE) in Australia. NICE has been a respected specialist in high quality distance education programmes over several decades. The programme is fully accredited in Australia and the degrees awarded are recognised not only by Australia’s public universities but also internationally for entry into doctoral programmes. The programme emphasises: Research, Curriculum Development, Methodological concerns, and Leadership and Administration.
The M.Ed is being offered with four options (or streams) for concentration:
Stream 1: Involves coursework plus a final Integration Module that involves a literature review and a major paper demonstrating an integrative understanding of the practical implications of what has been learned.
Stream 2: Involves coursework and an Integrated Research Module, including methodological studies, directed reading and a minor research project.
Master of Education (Research):
is a research degree including intensive studies in research methodology.
Master of Education (Professional Leadership and Training):
This programme is designed for qualified professionals in disciplines other than education, who are involved in an administrative role in an educational institution or in the training of fellow professionals in their own field and desire to gain a better understanding of educational principles to enable them to be more effective in their educational involvement.
Persons wishing to apply for admission to study in the Bachelor of Theology degree programme are expected to provide the University Admissions Officer with evidence that he or she meets the academic qualifications for admission, together with the specified application fee... See More
